Biography:
Lisseth Gavilan is currently a NASA post doctoral fellow at the Space Science & Astrobiology Branch at NASA's Ames Research Center. The fellowship is managed by Universities Space Research Association (USRA) and if you would like to know more about the NPP please visit their site for more information.
Lisseth grew up in Peru and moved to the US for college, where she obtained a bachelor's degree in physics from Carleton College (Minnesota), and a masters degree in physics from SUNY Stony Brook (New York). She then moved to France, where she worked on laboratory astrophysics to understand the formation of molecular hydrogen in the interstellar medium. Here she obtained a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the Paris Observatory.
Lisseth is currently working at Ames's Astrophysics & Astrochemistry Laboratory with Farid Salama, using the COSmIC chamber to study the evolution of carbon in the interstellar medium. Using a pulsed discharge nozzle she investigates the condensation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into dust grains. These grains are studied with complementary spectroscopic techniques, including infrared microscopy and mass spectrometry.
Lisseth's major publications can be found on the Astrochemistry Laboratory's Publications Pages.
